“Tongue twisters” are sentences or poems with repeated sounds that make them difficult to pronounce. People use them as fun word games. Can you think of a tongue twister in your language?

1. Go to Tongue Twisters for the ESL/EFL Classroom.

2. Read the tongue twisters there and choose your 3 favorite. Do not choose ones we have talked about in class. Write them below.

3. Talk to three people and ask them to say the tongue twisters you chose.

4. Ask each person which tongue twister they think is the hardest.

5. Write your results in the chart on the page I gave you in class.

6. Pick out your favorite tongue twister, ideally one that is difficult for you. Practice saying it aloud. You will have to say it for the class this Friday.

7. Bring your paper to class Friday, October 6.

Lab 3 – due 09/29/06

Transportation / Using the internet

Do you know how to “get around” in Little Rock? If you don’t have a car, what kind of transportation can you use?

Coming and going: The Airport
Little Rock has the Little Rock National Airport.

1. Go to the airport’s website .

2. Find the link Maps & Directions and click it.

3. Look at the DIRECTIONS to the airport.

4. If you are driving from Memphis or somewhere in East Central Arkansas, how would you get to the Little Rock Airport?

(Here is a map if you want to look at the highways.)

In the city: Buses
In Little Rock, the buses are run by Central Arkansas Transit (CAT).

1. Go to CAT’s website.

2. Find the link for Bus Fares. (It is in a green stripe on the right.)

3. Look at the Fare Schedule. What do you think a “fare” is?

a. A fun event with farm animals and amusement games and rides.

b. The price (money) for riding the bus.

c. A long way.

4. How much does it cost for an adult to ride the bus one time? (Cash Fare)

5. If you are a student, how much does a 31-day pass cost? (Pre-Paid Fare)

In the city: Taxicabs
In Little Rock, taxis are not everywhere. If you need one, you will probably have to make a phone call.

1. Go to the search result for the Yellow Cab Company (http://littlerock.citysearch.com/profile/37509371/little_rock_ar/yellow_cab_co.html). What is their phone number?

Intermediate: Lab 2

Filed under: intermediate, lab — shaynasclass @ 2:03 am

In class this week we will be talking about places people live. What is your “dream house” (ideal home) like?

1. Draw a picture of your dream house or find a picture of a house that looks a lot like your ideal home.

Bonus point: draw a floorplan with the rooms and furniture labeled!

2. Write one or two paragraphs describing your dream house. Be sure to have a topic sentence and arrange your ideas logically. Include the following information:

  • Location (city, country, mountains, forest, beside the sea, beside a lake, etc.)
  • Size (how many rooms, how many stories)
  • Type of structure (apartment, condo, townhouse, cabin, farmhouse, compound, etc.)
  • View (what can you see from the windows?)
  • Rooms (how many? what type?)
  • Features (fireplace, garden, balcony, big kitchen, courtyard, hot tub, laundry room, etc.)
  • The reason for your choices. Why do you want these things in a house? What special things would you like to do while you live there? What will your life be like?

3. Bring your picture(s) and paragraph(s) to class on Friday, September 22.
