If you could choose an animal to represent your country (other than any animal that is already a national symbol) what would it be?

ON Thursday, bring a picture of the animal and explain your choice to the class. What qualities do your country and the animal share?

Animal babies

Animal babies

In class, we talked about vocabulary for the young of different animals. (Examples: a baby cow is called a “calf” and baby wolves and bears are called “cubs.)  The site linked above has a chart with pictures, baby names, and group names for many different types of animals.

1. Read the following essay from Annie Dillard’s book Teaching a Stone to Talk. Pay attention to her main idea and the main examples she focuses on.

“Living Like Weasels”

2. Now watch the following video of a mother weasel killing a snake to take to her babies.

3. In about 150 to 200 words, summarize what you believe Annie Dillard was saying in her essay and compare what you saw in the video to her ideas.
